MAYA
BALAM MEYONG
- on tour -
Originally from Belgium and of Cameroonian origin, Maya Balam Meyong is a dancer (currently with the Akram Khan company), creator, as well as co-founder and artistic director of the movement-based art collective, The Dancing Society.
She holds a BFA in Dance from PSPBB/Université Paris 8, as well as Rick Odum’s training and teaching programs, to which she was awarded a scholarship. An alumnus of Springboard Dance Montreal and Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Program, she has also been awarded by the Vocatio Foundation and Phil Collins’ Little Dreams Foundation. Maya furthered her skills through various intensive programs at the Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham Schools. She also holds a Bachelor of Laws and Philosophy from Université Saint-Louis in Brussels (thesis: “Poétiques de l’invisible. Pour une philosophie dialogique de la danse”).
After graduation, Maya moved to Brussels where she danced for various choreographers while developing her own artistic vision, works and projects. She co-founded The Dancing Society, a collective at the intersection of dance and different art forms, as well as Perpetuum Mobile, an international dance festival based in Brussels.
Her move to New York, where she joined the CR Dance Company, was a major source of influence for Maya, particularly Gaga and physical theatre, coupled with her personal search for movement. This confirmed her desire to create movement-based works and direct productions alongside her performance career.
Maya is currently dancing for the Akram Khan Company as part of the international tour of “The Jungle Book Reimagined”. In the 24/25 season, Maya is assisting Luxembourg choreographer Jill Crovisier for the production of “The Game Grand Finale” and will also focus on the development of a creative environmental project, “The Undergrounds of the Possible”.
Maya is the director, curator and producer of the Perpetuum Mobile festival. Since 2018, this artistic and cultural project has been of significant importance in its artistic development, its reflection and the deep and lasting encounters it has fostered. Maya and the festival's gold team look forward to sharing with you the unique, generous and meaningful Perpetuum Mobile 2025.
